Pedalling

The acid in my veins
Don't make things easy.
Can I be held in your high esteem for always?
And introspection only serves to
Disarm my weakening grip on these lonely roads.
So take your fingers off the brakes
If you want to get to Paris on time.
Lanterne Rouge there is honour in crossing the line
Let the Champs Élysées be your goal.
Pedal, pedal, pedalling on.
No, I never doubted you.
On those mountainsides,
Keep safe tonight.
In strange Scottish campsites,
Keep warm tonight.
Pedal, pedal, pedalling on,
No I never doubted you.
Lanterne Rouge there is honour in crossing the line
On the Champs Élysées.

I'll plough my own furrow;
Been on a bandwagon far too long.
I'll build my own castle;
Foundations out of solid stone.
And from the highest tower
I'll watch a forest marching in on me.
From the highest tower
I'm in my own good company.
Up here, can anything harm me?
I'll plough my own furrow;
Been on a bandwagon far too long.
We're all singing together
But no-one's sticking super strong.
Up in the biggest bedroom,
We've got a groove on constant, constant loop.
Ideas are coming, taking their sweet time
But they will hit us soon.
Up here, can anything harm me?
I once wrote a beat - it was super sweet.
We made 200 CDs and we almost sold them out.
Can we replicate all that we create
Or is it time and place
And have they been and gone?
I'll forever be, inextricably,
Bound both hands and feet to what we tried to be.
I've never been here before
And now I'll never leave.

I have no horses which never tire.
I've seen no chariots of fire.
I have no giant's shoulders upon which to stand.
I have no golden shores on which to land.
I have no ship to take me to the moon.
Cupid's bow don't always fire true.
My shoddy armour's pierced almost every day
By things that I've done and stupid things I've said.
I have no strength, to give me flight.
I have no will to pick a fight.
So I will stand, watch water rise around my feet.
Until a whole ocean covers me.
And it's fighting I don't want to see
But it's here and it's raging in me.
While I floated at sea,
The flotsam and the jetsam were good company.
While I swam for dear life,
The sharks bit my ankles and the seagulls my eyes.

Time stands like a millpond.
It drives a backbreaking wheel
That I've not the strength or the skill
Or the will for.
Barely a trickle
Carves a route through the hills
And down to an ocean
Too vast to imagine.
If only we were what we have become
It would all have been different,
The cool things we'd have done.
And the weight of water, held up in the dam
Is the wait for the wheel and the race,
For years to come.
They could be the best ones.
Dive in an ocean,
Dry drop in a lake.
Fear no the cold,
That freezes your heartache.
All that I took, I took for granted.
All that you gave I cherish.

From a million miles away a photon came to earth today.
It took over a century, I blinked and it hit my skin.
I feel I let it down. I wish I had let it in.
One step outside, two worlds collide.
It’s just like mine but multiplied and magnified
A million times.
And my world took up all of me.
Can I grow exponentially
Until I fill up entireties
Of time and space,
Or hold on, or hang up!
From a million miles away a photon came to earth today.
It took over a century, I blinked and it hit my skin.
I feel I let it down. I wish I had let it in.
And how can I comprehend all of the chaos that descends
As light bounces off everything I do and I don't behold.
And how can I believe everything I've been told?

The rocks on which I try to stand
Have not even been dry land for very long.
The moons we try to stick our standards in
Have only just started orbiting.
They're babies on the block.
So I'll slip on, slip on my frictionless shoes
And I'll circumvent the globe as it spins beneath my feet
While I'm left standing still.
Stick your gladdest rags on, come to Renatos with me.
Get out of this hole of your own digging.
Leave your mobile alone, dance on the tables and sing.
Sing Coo-coo-caroo, till 2.30 in the morning.
Hope springs eternally.
I heard your new friend down in the hall.
Good looking, confident and tall no doubt.
I threw myself on the bedroom floor
And tore my hair and clothes.
Your new friend, he must have it all -
Good looking confident and tall no doubt.
Curse these paper thin bedroom walls!
I tore my hair and clothes.
So stick your gladdest rags on, come to Renatos with me.
Get out of this hole of your own digging.
Leave your mobile alone, dance on the tables and sing.
Sing Coo-coo-caroo, till 2.30 in the morning.
I hope hope springs eternally.
